(Dublin) Killester

Established in 1967 by founder Father Michael Casey. This young curate at St Brigid's Parish in Killester introduced basketball into this northside suburb of Dublin as it was a sport that could be played by both boys and girls. He setup 3 courts in the car park across the road from the local church. With the help of  Sean Sheehan, Maura Stenson, Julia Murphy, Valerie Brennan, Vinny Green, and many others , Killester quickly became one of the most successful basketball clubs in Ireland. In 1973 under the direction of Father Eamon McCarthy,  Killester  entered a senior men's team into the Irish National League for the competition's inaugural season. Between 1975 and 1977, the club won three consecutive National League championships  This was immediately followed by the success of the Killester Kittens who went on to win two Women"s championships in 1978 and 1980.

  1. This helped fill in a gap in my project Rob - do you know what newspaper you got the report & final table of Killester's 1976/77 winning season - it looks like the Irish Times?
