Masters Basketball has been an active and expanding segment of the sport in Ireland for many years. In many respects it evolved out of the Junior competitions which have been in existence since almost the beginning of club basketball. It accommodated extending the careers of many veteran players who were still anxious to compete.
Three common terms that are used somewhat interchangeably to reference Masters basketball in general are Masters, Veteran and Maxibasketball. Here are the minor differentiations:
- Masters basketball is normally used to reference players (age 30 +) of any Skill Level who no longer plays organized basketball on a "frequent" or regular basis.
- Veterans basketball refers to players (age 30 + ) with higher skill and experience levels who no longer play in higher organized competitive leagues.
- Maxibasketball normally refers to Masters or Veterans basketball played at an International level.
