(Dublin) Marian

                                                         

Established 1968   

The Marian Basketball Club was founded in 1968. The initial youth team entered into the Dublin Minor League consisted of pupils and past-pupils of Marian College Ballsbridge. This club also included some past members of the Shannon Dodgers (affiliated with St. Marys College, Athlone, another Marist Brothers school.). The team won the Dublin Minor Championship and two years later, the club also entered a team in the Dublin Senior League. 
Some players in those early years included Hall of Famer Paul Meany , Michael Meany, Ken Mc Intyre, Sean Conroy, ,Fran Ryan and Donal Breathnach among others. Their first coach was Bro. Fintan, from Marian College. He was soon followed by Paul Meany as player/coach.

Many of the Marian players continued their basketball careers with University College Dublin (UCD) which later established a formal connection between the club and the school.

Key Dates:  In 1972 Marian won the GWI Trophy defeating St Galls  in Sligo.
                    In 1973 Marian won the Men's National League (Cup) Championship.
                    In 1975-1977 Marian finished runner up to Killester in the National League
                    In 1978 Marian won the Men's National League Championship
                    In 1978 Marian represented Ireland in the Federation Cup

Point of Interest: Brian Berman (4) played at Columbia University in New York before enrolling in the Royal College of Surgeons (Dublin). One of the first Americans to play in the National League.
